רנדי ניומן משלב באלבומו החדש Dark Matter שיר על נשיא רוסיה, ולדימיר פוטין – Putin. ניומן קיבל השראה לכתוב על המנהיג הרוסי, אחרי שראה תמונה של פוטין בלי חולצה רוכב על סוס. האלבום יכלול גם שירים על האחים קנדי, הבלוז האגדי המוסיקאי סוני בוי וויליאמסון, מדע ודת, אהבה, אובדן ועוד. אלבומו הקודם של ניומן Harps and Angels יוצא ב-2008. ניומן נמנע מאמירה פוליטית. "מה שעניין אותי הוא שאדם עם עוצמות בלתי מוגבלות, עושה דברים כאלה, כמו רכיבה על סוס ללא חולצה. זה משעשע ועם זאת מטריד". לדבריו, השיר הושפע בחלקו ע"י שיר ישן של וילי ג'ונסון מ-1943 שנקרא  “Stalin Wasn’t Stallin’” – סטאלין לא היה סטאלין.
