"לרדוף אחרי מפלים" היא הדרך של TLC (קיצור של tender loving care) לבטא את האופן בו אנשים רודפים אחרי חלומות ללא מחשבה על ההשלכות. השיר בתחילתו מדבר על יחסים בין אם לבנה בעיר. הוא רודף אחרי "מפלים" (כסף וכבוד באמצעות סמים), אבל אמו יודעת שזה יכול להסתיים לא טוב. בהמשך עוסק השיר ביחסי גבר עם אישה. "המפל" שלו הוא מין מזדמן – יש לו "אובססיה טבעית לפיתוי". פירוש הדבר שהוא בוגד במישהי או שהאישה שהוא פוגש בוגדת במישהו. כך או כך, הוא חולה ב- HIV ונפטר ("שלושה מכתבים לקחו אותו למנוחתו הסופית").
TLC בלטו במודעות לאיידס – מי שכונתה "עין שמאל" הייתה לעתים קרובות לובשת קונדומים המחוברים לבגדיה כדי לקדם מסר של יחסי מין בטוחים.
צוות ההפקה באטלנטה Organised Noize, שהפיק את השיר כתב את השיר הזה עם מארקס את'רידג', ועם חברת הלהקה ליזה ("Left Eye") לופס שהוסיפה בית ראפ. לופס התמודדה אז עם בעיות אישיות, שבאות לידי ביטוי בראפ שלה. היו לה יחסים סוערים מאוד עם שחקן הכדורגל אנדרה ריסון, וב- 9 ביוני 1994 היא שרפה את הנעליים החדשות שלו באמבטיה שלו, וגרמה לשריפת כל אחוזתו. היא הודתה באשמה בהצתה, אך התפייסה עם ריסון.
