Money For Nothing מתוך Brothers in Arms, של להקת "דייר סטרייטס" הוא מעין סטירה של מארק קנופלר הנוגעת לזמרי דור ה- MTV, שממשיכה להיות אקטואלית. השיר עוסק בראייה-ביקורת של "האדם הפשוט" על כוכב הרוק והחיים הקלים שהוא חי בהשוואה לאנשי העבודה אמיתית.
מארק קנופלר כתב את השיר אחרי ששמע אנשי חברת משלוחים בניו-יורק מתלוננים על עבודתם הקשה מול הכוכבים הנהנתים – בעת שצפו ב – MTV. הוא כתב את השיר במטבח החנות בה ביקר. חלק מהטקסט מורכב ממילים שהם אמרו.
קנופלר הסביר כי השיר נכתב מנקודת מבטה של דמות מטופשת, שחושבת כי מוסיקאים עושים כסף מכלום – "money for nothing". בראיון לרולינג סטון הוא התייחס גם לאנשים שהגיבו לשיר בביקורת משום שחשבו כי במילה faggot (הומו) יש משום ירידה על קהילת ההומוסקסואלים: בסך הכל מדובר על פרט מהסיפור, חלק מהקונטקסט, שמתאר התייחסות של אותם פועלים לכוכבי רוק.
סטינג, שמשתתף בביצוע (הוא נשמע בתחילת השיר במשפט – "I want my MTV") – סייע בכתיבת השיר. הוא לא רצה קרדיט על הכתיבה, אבל חברת התקליטים התעקשה להכניס את שמו – כדי לזכות בתמלוגים. יש המזהים קווי דמיון בין השיר הזה ל – "Don't Stand So Close To Me" של פוליס.
הוידיאו החדשני של השיר בבימויו של סטיב בארון הציג לראשונה הנפשה ממוחשבת. הקליפ זכה ב – "הוידיאו הטוב ביותר" בפרסי ה – MTV לשנת 1986.
