יש מי ששאל האם 1977 היתה השנה הגדולה ביותר בתולדות המוזיקה? השנה מזוהה עם דיסקו ועם פאנק, אבל מציגה מוזיקה נהדרת כמעט מכל הז'אנרים. מצד אחד הפסקול של Saturday Night Fever הוציא את הדיסקו מהמועדונים ופיזר אותו כמעט לכל מקום. פריחת הדיסקו הולידה פרח מרהיב בדמותה של דונה סאמר עם הלהיט האולטימטיבי “I Feel Love”.
שתי מגמות מוזיקה מרכזיות התנגשו בשנת 1977: פסגת הפאנק רוק ועליית הדיסקו. נולדו הרכביםשיועדו להיכל התהילה של הרוק העתידיים, ה-Clash הוציאו בתור ה-B-side של הסינגל הראשון שלהם שיר בשם "1977" , והודיעו שהפאנק לא לוקח שבויים גם לא ביטלס, רולינג סטונס לא אלביס. ברשימה הזו גם סקס פיסטולס, הראמונס, באזוקס, הסטרנגלרס. כולם הוציאו אלבומי פאנק חשובים, שסימנו את השנה הגדולה ביותר לפאנק מאז שפרץ שנה לפני כן. מהצד האמריקאי יצא הראשון של The Talking Heads שכלל את הסינגל "Psycho Killer".
פליטווד מק הוציאו את Rumours, שמכר 45 מיליון אלבומים וממשיך למכור גם ב-2022. בילי ג'ואל הצליח בגדול עם The Stranger" "Just the Way You Are"" Good “Only the Good Die Young” כמו גם עם “She’s Always a Woman to Me”.
1977 הייתה לא רק פאנק ודיסקו, אלא גם שנה חשובה עבור שמות כמו Queen, AC/DC ו-Kiss. וכמובן Eagles עם שיר השנה – Hotel California. וכן, זו השנה שאלביס מת והשאיר עוד להיט – Way Down. סטיבי וונדר הטביע חותם סול עם Sir Duke הנפלא. ואם סול אז KC & The Sunshine Band עם I'm Your Boogie Man. קאנטרי? קני רוג'רס ו"לוסיל", גם קריסטל גייל עם Don't it Make My Brown Eyes Blue. ומה יותר טוב משנה עם אלבום חדש ומבריק של דיוויד בואי? למעשה הוציא שניים: Low ו-Heroes.
