אד שירן מבכה אובדן של מישהו.  השיר הוא שיקוף מהות התחושה הקשה שכל דבר מזכיר לך אותו ואת הדברים שעשו ביחד. לפעמים מוציא את עצמו מהמציאות כדי להקהות את כאב האובדן. השיר  יותר קודר מהסינגלים הקודמים שלו גם במוסיקה ובסאונד המייצר תרחיש אווירה.
"Eyes Closed", הסינגל הראשון מהאלבום הבא של שירן, נכתב במקור כשיר פרידה, הוא קיבל משמעות חדשה לאחר ששירן סבל מרצף של אובדנים אישיים כמו מותו של ידידו ג'מאל אדוארדס מפלטפורמת המוסיקה SBTV.
לעתים קרובות עצב הוא משהו שעוקב אחריך, עוטף את החדרים שבהם אתה נמצא, ואתה יכול להרגיש ולראות את זה, אבל אף אחד אחר מסביבך לא יכול. שירן החליט לתרגם את התחושה בקליפ באמצעות מפלצת כחולה מעין החבר הדמיוני, שהולכת וגדלה ככל שהסרטון ממשיך, עד שהיא תופסת חדרים שלמים, דימוי לעצב הגדול שממלא את עיניו.
לקול האופייני של שירן יש גוון עשיר. הרבה מהעומס הרגשי שלו קיים בביצוע הזה. "אני ממשיך לרקוד בעיניים עצומות", הוא שר, וגם: "האשליה שוב כאן / ואני חושב שתחזור הביתה בקרוב"… זה אינו נשמע שיר אהבה שגרתי.  התמונה שמצייר שירן – הרגע שבו הוא פוקח את עיניו בידיעה שהאדם שהוא אוהב כבר לא שם – ממחישה סיטואציה לא שגרתית. שירן שר את השיר ברגש עוצמתי, פה ולב שווים לחלוטין.
