הדעה הרווחת היא שהשיר הזה נכתב על חברתו של נואל גלאגאר דאז – מג מאתיוס, שתמונתה הועלתה על קיר מודעות של תלמיד בית הספר, שעליו נתלו פוסטרים של שחקני כדורגל וכוכבי פופ. גרסה אחרת: השיר נכתב על חבר דמיוני שבא להציל אותך מעצמך. המוזיקה מבוססת על Wonderwall Music, אלבום אינסטרומנטלי שג'ורג' הריסון כתב לסרט Wonderwall בשנת 1968 בהשתתפות ג'יין בירקין.
זה היה הסינגל הראשון של אואזיס שיצא בארה"ב. האלבום What's the Story Morning Glory הוא האלבום הנמכר ביותר בבריטניה אחרי Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band של הביטלס. בתחילה נואל רצה לשיר את השיר הזה, אבל הוא נתן לאחיו ליאם גלגר את התפקיד, ונואל בסופו של דבר שר "אל תסתכל אחורה בזעם".
"אואזיס" התאפיינה בסגנונות מגוונים (מרוק פסיכודלי עד פאנק) שלא לקחו לשומקום, אבל ברמת הכתיבה והביצוע הייתה כאן בשורה לחובבי הרוק. הם יצרו פופ כמעט "מדעי", חף מריפים כבדים בכוח, מגראנג'יות מטאלית, מכל מיני שמונצעס ובולשיטים. "אואזיס" היתה מעין המשכיות מפתיעה שמחברת במסלול בטוח המון תחנות.
'Wonderwall' הוא השיר המוזרם ביותר מהשירים מאז שנות ה-70 עד שנות ה-90.
